Maddalena, Vars, Izoard, Monginevro, Sestriere: an exciting and terrible sequence of mountain passes, that Fausto Coppi completed on a solitary escape, chased by Gino Bartali e by the peloton at an immense distance.
Starting in Cuneo, we will head up towards the Stura of Demonte Valley, on the old military road leading to Vinadio fortress, far from cars and surrounded by the woods. We will gently climb to nearly 2000 metres of the Maddalena pass, to descend in the Ubaye Valley and go up again, on the challenging slopes of the Col de Vars.
The town of Guillestre will open the doors of the Queyras region, with its castles and legendary climbs, first among them the Col de l’Izoard. We will ride through the Casse Deserte, one of the greatest place on earth for cycling, before the descent to Briançon and the Monginevro climb, that brings us back to Italy.
Sestriere, lying in the green of the Alpine pastures, will be the last challenge of our trip before the long way down to Pinerolo through the whole Chisone Valley, crossing Fenestrelle and his fortress, the “Chinese wall” of the Alps.
