The Mont-Cenis

Mountain biking on Hannibal’s Alps

1 or more days

Frequented for centuries, the area of the Moncenisio is an incredible concentration of military roads, paths and extraordinary landscapes across France and Italy, ideal place for mountain biking. You can climb some of the peaks that are reflected in the big lake– Malamot, Turra, Pattacroce, Mont Froid– and then ride downhill on the trails that lead back to the plateau, or bike around the forts located on every relief, or further towards the alpine lakes set in the side valleys – Lago d’Arpon and Lac de Savine.

A true paradise for the MTB, with routes for all difficulties.

No one knows for sure, but many people really think that Hannibal and his army of men and elephants have passed through the Mont Cenis region on his crossing of the Alps. Certainly, after him, military and travelers have crowded the plateau for centuries at the borders between Piedmont and Savoy. In the past also land of engineers: one of the first alpine railways passed here, and the great dam still dominates the landscape.

They have left us an incredible network of roads and trails, a true paradise for mountain biking: among the many possible routes DR Cycling Tours has selected the most significant, that in addition to being a fantastic cycling day can be combined for an unforgettable weekend on the Mont Cenis plateau.

The tour around the lake is the most classic, suitable for all and incredibly panoramic with many points of interest to discover, while the Tour dei Forti, slightly more challenging, crosses the whole plateau touching the main fortresses erected by the italians at the end of 19th century.

The ascent of Mount Malamot is demanding but the panorama from over 2,900 meters of altitude of the summit offers a magnificent view over all the mountains of the area, from the rocky elone to the glaciers of the vanoise.

The easy single track of Petite Turra and Mont Froid offers great fun in a fabulous scenario, while riding towards the Arpon Lake or the Lac de Savine is a real dive into the most authentic and wild nature of this corner of the Alps.
